أرض من الأضداد 

إلى الجـواهـري

لمن تغنَّي  أيّها  الراحلُ ؟

لا دجـلةٌ  تـلكَ

        ولا بـابـلُ ..

كلتاهما مـوتٌ ،

وكلتاهما نارُ البداياتِ ،

أيقوى على فوضاهما شيءٌ ؟

          أيقـوى دمٌ ؟

          أو لغـةٌ هـوجـاءُ

          أو سـاحـلُ .. ؟

أرضٌ من الأضدادِ :

كم أشرقتْ، وكم غفـا

مصباحُها الذابـلُ..

أرضٌ من الأضـدادِ :

قيثارةٌ، وقـاتلٌ يجتـاحهُ

                    قاتـلُ ..

تـرفـلُ بـالمــوتِ ،

ولكنهـا: تفـنـى،

                 وتحيا طفـلـةً

                          بابـلُ ..

For whom do you chant your glory song you weary departing traveler

This Tigress is not what you knew, nor is this the same Babylon

Both are now lethal,

Flames of early creation

Can anyone endure their chaos?

Which blood,

which insane language,

which shore

Can ever withstand their fury?

It is the land of contradiction:

How many times did it rise & set

How many times did its lantern fade?

It is the land of contradiction:

A harp & a killer slain by another

It is rich with death & demise,

Yet as it dies,

Babylon remains

a lively child
